"Our guest artist progam welcomes it's first artist, Michael Lanning. Michael has made an absolutely wonderful series of timers based on the original PrannaTimer design and we look forward to seeing more of his work in the future. "

Catalog of PrannaTimers - Guest Artist Series

Michael Lanning

PrannaTimer has invited Michael to show and sell his timers directly from the Pranna.com site. Michael's craftsmanship is excellent and his timers feature handcrafted wire loops custom matched to each timer. Each timer is signed and numbered by the artist. The first of his offerings are shown below.

As of now, all of the timers Michael has listed on the site have been sold. We will look forward to posting more in the near future.

Introducing the very first PrannaTimer built from a solid block of Cherry. This experimental production technique allowed Michael to price the timers under $100. So far this is the only one available, but we expect to see more soon.

The timer has no removable dish so incense ash can be removed with a small brush or cloth. The hammer has a small leather dot which hits the bowl to produce the soft gong sound you're familiar with. Cracks in this natural Cherry block are filled with an aluminum epoxy mixture that is very cool and make this timer particularly unique. Below are two views of the "Block" timer design:

Ebony: I had an opportunity to buy a large quantity of ebony from a hardwood store going out of business. I sold most of it, but saved some very select pieces, waiting for the right project. Ebony is one of the most rare and expensive woods on the planet. It can cost up to $100 a board foot and is almost exclusively used in making musical instruments.

Black Walnut: One day I spent hours digging through every piece of black walnut in the store, looking to find some interesting figure. I found a few select pieces, which I used for these timers. Black walnut has been a favorite of mine since youth. A domestic wood, it has rich, dark colors.

Purple Heart: I was shopping at one of my favorite hardwood stores when I learned that the store had just received a new shipment of purple heart. It was still in the back room. There, on top, were some figured pieces. I had never seen figured Purple Heart before, so I bought it. The purple is the nature color of the wood.

Profile: Michael Lanning

"I grew up in a small rural town in western Washington timber country and have always been touched by the beauty of wood. It has a kind of magic. For 20 years, I hauled around a collection of selected exotic woods, waiting for the right project. In 2006, when I was looking online for a meditation timer, I saw the Pranna timer. There was no question in my mind that this was going to be how I timed my meditation. Being a woodworker, I ordered Dave’s kit and made my own. I have used the timer for the past four years, and its use has become a beautiful ritual in my practice. I delight in creating works of art, and I believe you will enjoy the beauty of the Pranna timer design, its function and the wood."
